Addiction is a disease--a chronic, relapsing one--that, untreated, has nasty and costly social consequences: illness, disability, death, learning disabilities, poor school performance, child abuse and neglect, domestic violence, crime--to name a few. Our fear of these consequences often leads us to respond with tough sanctions. It is of course important to hold individuals accountable for their conduct. But the first line of defense is prevention and we can do a much better job at it. Treatment is no sure bet, but success rates of good programs exceed those of many long shot cancer therapies on which we spend millions of dollars. And if we fail to treat the disease, there is little hope of stemming these consequences.

**11/30/05***
Odyssey House, New Orleans is OPEN> They are doing intakes for the GNO area***

Louisiana OAD (state/federal funded services) and they have given you a clinic that is closed or no other viable solution for immediate help we can assist in providing resources that are available today to help for those who need impatient care for addiction treatment.

We are not
aware of any  expanded services but know it is being "worked on" and we will pass this on as soon as we know more.

We know that our state system before Katrina provided only 8% of those in need of treatment with help, and now that need is growing.  In addition after hours, 24hr impatient treatment, medical detox,  waiting lists, or evening/weekend needs are emerging as a problem.  We can can help with a referral to treatment center that should be able to pre-screen and admit you asap--they will also pay for transportation to and from their facilities.  We are so grateful for this help.

Are you or a friend in need?

What we knew:  Our Policy efforts to eliminate poverty, incarceration and illiteracy to offer hope to the predictable harms described in this series published 3 years ago. Washing Away: T-P seriesonhurricanedisaster Published June 23-27, 2002)

We want to make sure those reaching out today know that the countless thoughts, prayers, and acts of kindness mean a great deal to all of us working to focus on solutions to end the struggles we know to be rooted in in poor communities.  Louisiana leads the nation in many social ills, and many feel that efforts to bring change are futile, today there is hope for progress and sadness in the loss and needless struggle of thousands.

both hurricanes.

More than 30 days after Katrina,  trailers provided by FEMA,  are becoming available, and clean up efforts are underway, the extra literature we have  will be sent to treatment/ recovery programs in the impacted region.  If your program, or community is in need of Recovery Literature contact us and we will get it right to you.
