2001 Public Opinion Survey  Conducted by MultiQuest,  INC for the

Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse for Greater New Orleans& the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission

 

 

In summary:

• The "image" of New Orleans is making it difficult to prevent and address our "significant" problem with alcohol and other drugs.

• Overwhelming majority (76%) believe alcohol / drug abuse is a significant problem in our community.

• Most believe prevention begins in the home, yet six in ten of us believe parents are not equipped to do the job.

• Most believe we are NOT winning the "war on drugs" but DO believe all levels of government (especially local) should be committing serious resources to reduce the problem through prevention and treatment.

• Most believe drug testing in the schools is a strategy worth using.

• One in eight families have had addiction problems but one in six have had problems getting services.

 

Methodology

• Total of 606 persons from Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, Plaquemines, and St.Tammany Parishes were used.

• Sample utilized all active telephone exchanges, combining them with four random digits, making all numbers eligible.

• Conducted Feb. 9 - Mar. 4, 2000

• Standard error factor of plus/minus 4%.
