| Cenikor
Clients are referred by treatment professionals or by the
judicial system. Many times, a person comes to Cenikor because of
his or her own will to change. Family members can call to find out
more about our program, but the addict must make the call for
admission.
At the Core of Recovery
A group of Colorado prisoners wanting to change the direction of
their lives started Cenikor in 1967. They dedicated themselves to
staying clean and sober and helping others do the same. The name
Cenikor was chosen to reflect the core or center of an
individual-that emotional muscle that weakens in all addictions.
Cenikor's first treatment facility was a small house in Lakewood,
Colorado. The organization now has long-term residential treatment
centers and outreach offices in three states serving 500 clients
daily. The corporate office is located in Houston, Texas. We are
always interested in talking to communities who are in need of the
help Cenikor offers. |
MISSION:
Cenikor is a place for recovery; a place for change.
Cenikor is one of the oldest and most successful drug treatment,
education and prevention organizations in the United States. Our
program of recovery helps people develop social, behavioral,
vocational, educational and recreational skills to live a lifestyle
free of substance abuse.
On the Path to Change
The recovery program lasts about 2 1/2 years. It is not an easy path
and it is not for everyone. But for men and women, 18 years of age
and older, who truly want to change, it works. Ninety percent of
those who graduate from the program each year remain clean and
sober.
The Cost of Recovery
We charge no fee for our recovery program. Clients receive substance
abuse therapy, housing, medical care, educational opportunities,
everything needed to prepare them for a successful recovery-at no
cost!
Everyone works their way through Cenikor. Clients work in Cenikor-owned
and operated businesses; in jobs in the facility; or other
on-the-job training programs. Because of this, and due to the
generosity of contributors, Cenikor, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit
organization, does not rely on government support. |

Baton Rouge Facility
Substance abuse affects
everyone. Substance abuse knows no boundaries – not age, nor color,
nor ethnic background or socioeconomic status. The people at Cenikor
believe that the war on drugs should be fought not with
incarceration and other punitive measures but with treatment,
prevention and education. They believe this because they have been
fighting this battle for 35 years.
In the past 35 years, Cenikor has helped more than 30,000 people
find life after drugs.
Our program is different from other treatment providers in the
United States in two ways.
- Through peer identification, Cenikor gives individuals
a way to regain their self worth and create an addiction-free
future. We are not a quick fix. Our program stresses the long-term
benefits of family-not only strengthening the bonds with a
person's family members, but also forming new bonds with the
Cenikor family and others in the program.
- We do not rely on government funding for our existence,
but rather on our own labor force and generous support from the
community. We charge no fee to our residents. Everyone works at a
Cenikor-sponsored business or at one of the Cenikor facilities to
help pay for the program. Our cost per resident for one year of
the Cenikor program is about $20,000. Compare with $50,000. That's
what taxpayers in Texas pay to imprison a drug-abuser for one
year. (Imprisonment costs in Colorado and Louisiana are slightly
lower.) And Cenikor offers more positive results! [What Is a
Therapeutic Community?]
Recognizing a need
to expand its organization throughout the United States, Cenikor
opened up a facility in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on August 20, 2002.
With terrific support from the philanthropic community –
specifically, a $1,000,000 grant from the Pennington Foundation,
residents successfully renovated the old Parkland Hospital. With
153,000 square feet, they hope to house approximately 230 residents
at some point. With an average cost of $13,000 per inmate, per
year, in Louisiana, treating 230 residents would save the state a
whopping $2,990,000! That’s nearly three million dollars per year.
And, people in prison get very little treatment or real chance for
rehabilitation and/or recovery from addiction.
