The Louisiana Alliance to Prevent Underage Drinking

Major Alliance Goals include:

  • Reducing accessibility of alcohol to minors.
  • Limiting alcohol advertisements.
  • Raising the price of alcohol by increasing alcohol tax on single servings.

Purpose:  The Louisiana Alliance to Prevent Underage Drinking seeks to control underage alcohol use through collaborative efforts of citizens, public agencies, and private organizations. The Alliance embraces a coordinated approach to change, trying to counteract the current social environment that promotes underage drinking, modify public policy in this area and better enforce existing laws.

  1. Mobilize a broad base of organized action

  2. Change the social environment that facilitates underage drinking

  3. Change policies that affect the accessibility of alcohol to minors

Evaluation components include pre- and post-intervention public opinion surveys assessing attitudes toward specific alcohol control policies; evaluation of the process used in each state to build coalitions and provide changes in the environment that reduce alcohol-related problem; and tracking of all alcohol policies introduced at coalition sites.

Students from across Louisiana have formed a youth alliance, LA STARS, to speak with one voice for change in underage drinking legislation. These young people advocate policies targeted at countering the factors that contribute to underage drinking in Louisiana.
