Louisiana Parity Legislation
Louisiana has a crisis related to
untreated addiction.
The state is burdened with providing some 99% of all treatment services that
anyone (insured or uninsured) receives in our state. The national
average is at 64%. Parity stands to reduce the burden to state
systems.
Many people who are insured still must seek treatment in the public
system, as we do not have full "Parity" for substance abuse treatment.
Senator Paulette Irons, of New Orleans, has authored legislation that
when passed, stands to impact our state in a positive way for all.
We need your help. Please educate yourself, and your local state
legislators using the resources we are providing below! You may
easily download and fax letters of support to those who represent you

and tell us what your comments, suggestions, or any ideas you want
represented are. We are all working together and want everyone to know
that we each have a voice when it comes to our state’s law making
process.
Remember we are focused on supporting legislation which has been
submitted to us by our many members. These members represent a variety
of organizations with one common goal -- to reduce all the various
harms caused by untreated addiction, to promote a larger availability
of treatment services, to reduce the stigma of addiction and to make
this state a better place for us and our children. We can and already
have made such a huge difference.

Why Louisiana Parity SB778
brings tremendous hope to Louisiana residents:
- Addiction is a disease,
Treatment works!
- Undeserving those in need of
treatment adds to our states fiscal problems, increasing a
need for state dependence.
- Hardworking families, should
not face discrimination in their healthcare coverage for
treatment of a disease that is comparable to other chronic
disease (Diabetes and Heart Disease)
- Insurance companies stand to
gain the most, as costs to lifetime expenses of untreated
alcohol and drug problems, far exceed the cost of Parity
changes in policies.
- Trade and Industry groups will
find reduced spending in business insurance costs. Most
injuries at work can be traced to an alcohol or drug problem.
- Allowing those with healthcare
coverage to find treatment available, means they will no
longer be forced to wait for beds in the state system, and
freeing up space for those with no coverage and no other
option but the state services.
