In an effort to provide Americans a new pathway to the wealth of information related to prevention resources, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) recently launched its Prevention Pathways Web site.

Recognizing the need for information as well as the needs of potential users, CSAP developed Prevention Pathways with the intended goal of providing researchers, practitioners, program developers, or anyone who might have questions concerning alcohol abuse or illicit drug use, a centralized location for information.

CSAP's Prevention Pathways features many helpful resources including:

  • Videos and fact sheets on topics including alcohol and illicit drugs, school violence and violence against women.

  • A national directory of evaluators, and an online forum where Internet users can ask evaluators specific questions about substance abuse prevention.

  • Free online courses, including those qualifying for CEU's, for the public covering topics such as substance abuse among older adults and violence against women.

  • Lists of funding resources from private and corporate foundations and government agencies, as well as grant seeking information.

  • Links to other prevention Web sites.

Whether you're a parent, substance abuse prevention professional, or a human resource officer, Prevention Pathways offers its users a variety of programmatic links, including Model Programs, Prevention Registry, and Division of Workplace Programs that provide the latest, science-based prevention information, research, and resources for use and dissemination. Using Prevention Pathways, individuals can privately obtain valuable information and organizations are given additional tools to help in their proactive in their efforts to prevent substance use and abuse in their local communities.

Other major CSAP Web sites include:

  • NCADI, which provides general information on prevention and access to the catalog of materials that you can order, and
  • Decision Support System, which provides a set of interactive tools for strategic planning for prevention.

CSAP is a component of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). SAMHSA, a public health agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the lead federal agency for improving the quality and availability of substance abuse prevention, addiction treatment and mental health services in the United States.
