Dr. Ken Roy's Article for HopeNetworks,  Louisiana Parity

One of the difficult goals of long term sobriety is to replace the alcohol abusers previous time spent devoted to drinking with positive, time consuming activities (WebMD, 2001). This may be a significant hurdle since many abusers are preoccupied with drinking, looking forward to drinking, obtaining alcohol, and recovering from drinking, etc.

Alcohol Labeling-

Alcohol Health Risks Risks for Alcoholism Know the Signs Alcohol & Health

Right to know?
Warning: A  predisposition or family history of alcoholism/addiction places you at greater risk for alcohol health problems leading to addictive use of  this product.  This product contains alcohol, a drug that with risks of dependence/addiction.

Warning:  This product can cause poisoning and may cause death.
A product that does not indicate true health consequences to consumers.

 If Alcoholism is
genetic and environmental in nature, and is a disease effecting millions of Americans, why aren't there warning label's to this effect? People who drink, generally go through use, misuse, abuse, then addiction.  Knowing the progression, and finding validation of the real problems face with this product is important to a comprehensive strategy to stop cycles of abuse, and youth drinking.  Part of the challenge is that heavy consumption and underage illegal consumption is very profitable, leaving no motivation for big alcohol companies to willingly address this problem.  It is easy to realize how millions can struggle when you realize the total denial of "right to know" promotions of risks related to consumption of this product.  "There is no problem here and don't you dare tell anyone" is often the insanity known to those dealing with denial of this disease, and  it is working for this industry in addressing this problem.

 Do we the public,  not deserve adequate education, and  information on alcoholic beverage  labels? (like those on Tobacco products) Simply put, is this (Alcohol is the most abused drug in the U.S.) not a public health crisis?  18million Americans with alcohol problems?  Underage drinking is illegal, and a known risk for adult alcoholism along with other serious health and safety risks, yet promotions for alcohol do not disclose the entire truth to the public.

No Mention of enormous alcohol  health risks threatening millions of people. How can the very products that  when consumed trigger/or  lead to a fatal, progressive,  medical disease make no mention at all to this effect on the produce itself?   How can overdose injury and death not be mentioned on the product or ads?  The regulation of alcohol products, is different than for other drugs and foods.  In fact it is a very "industry" oriented agency, not "consumer" oriented like the FDA.

Gaining information on how to support change in the current marketing and labeling is not very clear to consumers in anyway.  Read  The current health warning labels on alcohol products which are not regulated by the FDA, like other drugs, but by the
Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau Department of the Treasury.

It almost seems unbelievable that a drug-product containing a drug- which results in the deaths of 100,000 Americans each year continues to have  no advisory to consumers as to the  direct correlation between consumption of alcohol products and risks for Alcoholism, Overdose, or Liver Damage for that matter Cancer (Alcohol is a known carcinogen) Some labels mention "health risks" but that statement makes no correlation to the fact that Alcoholism/Alcohol Dependence runs in families, and causes cancer, nor that use may result in sudden death.

The genetic risks and environmental risk factors need to be disclosed.  Alcoholism is a  disease has killed millions of Americans, and it is time to see that information that clearly discloses the risks, is clearly provided to those who "choose" to consume this product.  Adults do not have the  opportunity to make educated decisions related to the risks of drinking alcohol today.
  Youth who are drinking, along with adults, are denied basic public health information on products and promotions indicating the fatal risk for binge drinking (drinking large amounts of alcohol in a short period of time).

Alcohol related injury-#1 related cause of death for kids
How will our children know
  Alcoholism is genetic, and that we speak the truth when we tell them this, if there is no warning label?  Labeling alcohol, will provide validity to the research that we use to educate our children with.  Tobacco labels warn those who choose to smoke, and use a legal product, but alcohol does not?  The warning for women who are carrying children, is a positive step, yet why would an unborn child be any more valuable than one living in the family  where there are years upon years of family members who have suffered from  alcoholism?

Warning: A  predisposition or family history of alcoholism/addiction may place you at greater risk for alcohol misuse and dependence, consult a physician prior to consuming this drug.

This is a question our founder, a recovering alcoholic, concerned about her children, as well as the  youth in her community, and state, and nation are without the protections necessary today.  Efforts to bring change as a concerned citizens since 2001 have  been frustrating, little consumer interaction is possible on these issues.  Correspondence with he federal agency that regulates the Alcohol Industry proved futile, suggestions were seen as not relevant, and their function and role is clearly to support the Alcohol Industry, and other "Regulatory" detail oriented actions.  Fielding consumers questions and providing public support is not something their agency is obviously set up to do.  Those Consumer groups in the D.C. Area that have addressed these issues have not found success and hand the weak labeling efforts threatened when they ask upon any effort to bring reform.  People in Recovery are not organizing a petition (Lisa's Laws) to support federal lawmakers in change this see

 "I believe that fair disclosure to  those with a predisposition to Alcoholism is an urgent need in this country. This information, both in public campaigns, and on labels of alcoholic beverages, would allow those who choose to drink important  information about the possibility of triggering a fatal, progressive, disease that millions of us know too well.  The staggering statistics about children growing up in Alcoholic/Addicted homes is more than startling, considering their is no warning label on alcoholic beverages."

What Does the American Medical Society Policy on Alcohol and Advertising say? AMA's policy statement on labeling of Alcohol

H-30.984 Alcohol Advertising and Depiction in the Public Media

The AMA recommends

  1. that additional well-designed research be conducted under impartial and independent auspices to provide more definitive evidence on whether, and in what manner, advertising contributes to alcohol abuse;

  2. that producers and distributors of alcoholic beverages discontinue advertising directed toward youth, such as promotions on high school and college campuses;

  3. that advertisers and broadcasters cooperate in eliminating television program content that depicts the irresponsible use of alcohol without showing its adverse consequences (examples of such use include driving after drinking, drinking while pregnant or drinking to enhance performance or win social acceptance);

  4. that health education labels be used on all alcoholic beverage containers and in all alcoholic beverage advertising (with the messages focusing on the hazards of alcohol consumption by specific population groups especially at risk, such as pregnant women, as well as the dangers of irresponsible use to all sectors of the populace); and

  5. that the alcohol beverage industry be encouraged to accurately label all product containers as to ingredients, preservatives and ethanol content (by percent, rather than by proof). (BOT Rep. Q, A-86)
