99% of all Treatment in Louisiana is provided by an under funded OAD office.  They only have monies to treat 8%, while national average is 21%.
Parity for healthcare insurance coverage, means that those with health insurance would find coverage for alcohol/drug addiction available (just like it covers other chronic disease such as diabetes)  This will remove some of the burden and the 1000 people on waiting lists for treatment in Louisiana.  It will allow for those who are uninsured with no other possible coverage more access to treatment beds the state does have funding for.  Read more below on Parity

State tax payer funded labor and resources used to persuade a vote to kill responsible public safety legislation.
Most people who greatly need policy supporting a healthy Louisiana could not afford to swoon Louisiana House Transportation Committee members at Sullivan's restaurant   The alcohol lobby appears to have control over the employees of the House Transportation committee.  This invitation  was sent out just  prior to a critical vote on SB 479 to all voting House Transportation committee members and staff .  SEE NEWS for more

Alcohol related deaths are the number one killer of kids in Louisiana.

How can any policy maker not support closing loopholes?
HB 825 is a way to send a message, the law is 21 and our kids matter, we don't want them in bars where enforcement is impossible.  Mr. painter the commissioner for the ATC in LA, is not supporting this policy.  He claims that Louisiana leads the nation in enforcement policy of underage drinking.  Our members here at HN encouraged us to write him, address this, and we have had no reply.  In addition our recent interview with the Slidell Police Chief indicates that his most recent survey of underage compliance is not inline with the state's numbers.  90% of the establishments sold alcohol to minors.  10 of the 12 outlets, sold alcohol to minors.  Enforcement is a real problem in Louisiana. and we need to get serious in both the policy and in our own beliefs.  We need to educate the communities where the impact is greatest.  Remember, of all the things that can harm your children Alcohol related injuries is NUMBER ONE.

Alcohol Excise tax attempted in 2002 Read the 2002 proposed Alcohol Tax for treatment Legislation

Hope for Treatment Dollars continues,
In Louisiana last May we held a rally at the state capital, supporting efforts to increase treatment and prevention services, Louisiana serves only 8% of those in need, with a national average of 21%.  The well entrenched Alcohol Lobby, successfully continued to prevent (no increase on beer since 1948) taxation of the number one abused drug in Louisiana.  Polls across the state show strong support for taxing Alcohol if the tax is used for treating those with addictive disorders.
