I like what Dan Gray had to say. Look at what addiction did to the former Soviet Union. Was that what also brought on the fall of the Roman Empire? Perhaps so, as the available history could lead one to speculate that was how it was influenced. Right now, it has been estimated that around $500 billion of our nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) can be linked to alcohol and drug use/misuse/abuse/dependency/addiction. Around $170 billion of that goes for our nation's Departments of Correction (which have never corrected much). Roughly 35% is some part of the health care industry, our part being included here. Then there is the beer, wine, and spirits industry, the insurance industry, the legal profession, auto repair and sales, the gambling industry, etc., etc., etc.. My question is this: What happens when the genetic cure for addiction becomes a reality? Can our country stand to lose $500 billion annually out of our current economy? That could put us into a third world economy almost overnight. Our country depends far too much on alcohol and drugs as a source of jobs and revenue. Shouldn't we be doing something about this right now, before the "genetic cure" for addiction arrives? Or is our Federal Government well aware of this and secretly doing something about it right this moment?
