HAZELDEN
TAKES A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO
HELPING
RECENT HURRICANE VICTIMS
Center City, Minn., October 4,
2005 —The non-profit Hazelden Foundation, a national leader in drug and
alcohol addiction treatment, is donating more than $250,000 worth of
educational materials to aid victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In
addition, Hazelden will provide through the remainder of 2005 one detox/primary
care adult bed and two beds at its renewal center in Center City, Minn. to
organizations or individuals needing treatment or for any individual risking
relapse, along with $500 of transportation expenses.
“The loss of loved ones, homes,
jobs and community creates tremendous stress and despair, and we are
dedicated to helping people in recovery and those who seek recovery in this
difficult time,” said Ellen Breyer, Hazelden CEO.
Hazelden is coordinating its
efforts through HopeNetworks, a Louisiana-based organization working to put
together people who need treatment with organizations willing to donate
treatment services.
In addition, Hazelden’s Recovery Services Division provided the assistance
of a doctoral-level social worker to help with the needs of evacuees
relocated to St. Paul,
Minn.
The employee helped in the establishment of a mental health resources center
in the city. More than 600 families used the facility before it finished
its work last week.
The publishing arm of the
Foundation, Hazelden Publishing and Educational Services, is offering to
help groups, individuals and families recovering from addiction. The
educational materials being donated by Hazelden include books, pamphlets,
videos and curricula.
“As the largest publisher of
recovery materials, Hazelden has a unique opportunity and responsibility to
assist professionals in the area,” said Breyer.

Educational materials have proven
effective in long-term prevention, treatment, and recovery from addiction.
According to Hazelden, many people have called for help in replenishing
materials destroyed or lost as a result of the storms.
“We hope to not only help our
customers who depend on us for educational material to support their clients
and patients, but also individuals who depend on us for continuing support
during their recovery,” said Breyer.
