All Facts for Louisiana

History of
Alcohol Youth Poisoning deaths

Alcohol is the most widely abused legal drug in Louisiana. Problem drinkers and illegal drinkers bring great costs to Louisiana. An alcohol excise tax would reduce the tax burden that responsible consumers are forced to pay to cover costs unrelated to their use of alcohol. The lack of taxation directly costs each Louisiana family $640 each year in other taxation. In total, alcohol consumption in Louisiana costs taxpayers almost $3 billion each year, including $305 million in medical costs.

Alcoholism
is a disease. The craving that an alcoholic feels for alcohol can be as strong as the need
 for food or water.
An alcoholic will continue to drink despite serious family, health, or legal problems.
This disease is inherent according
to research.

Alcoholism cannot be cured at this time
. Even if an alcoholic hasn't been drinking for a long time, he or she can still suffer a relapse. To guard against a relapse, an alcoholic must continue to avoid all alcoholic beverages.

Alcoholism can be treated and people do recover. Alcoholism treatment programs use both counseling and medications to help a person stop drinking. Most alcoholics need help to recover from their disease. With support and treatment, many people are able to stop drinking and rebuild their lives.

Recovery  Saves Louisiana Money & Promotes Growth-

Only 8% of Louisiana adult residents finding recovery support (Treatment) and a mere 32 medical detox beds for 4.4 million residents, it is no surprise that Louisiana has many social ills, and clean up costs  related to untreated addiction. Studies by Economist Loren Scott clearly show that effective, available  treatment saves Louisiana tax payers money, and we know it  improves communities, while saving and restoring families.

Stunned to Death?

Taser Guns are used by law enforcement across the country,
a modern day "baton" -and for many very effective in their efforts to safely stop aggression during an arrest or during  policy custody.  There is a problem though- alcohol and other drug use by those in police custody who are  "stunned" with the taser, are dropping dead.  More than 84 deaths across the country.  Alcohol and other drugs are involved in some 80% of criminal behavior in this country, and a course of action is being called for to stop these deaths.
