Get Ready For Thursday
we will need to appear at the
capitol for this
committee,
this is not a good piece of legislation, and we don't need any
more deaths from underage drinking and alcohol overdose in
Louisiana. Read the Scoop on this nightmare bill--to allow
underage drinking?

Bills Oppose Treatment proven to work!
April 14th-Wednesday
Open
Container Bill Passed out of the Senate Judiciary C Committee-
This bill is really no big deal,
but in the past was opposed by the Alcohol Lobby. Not this
year, they were not opposed to fine for those passengers stopped
in vehicles and ticketed for an open container of alcohol in the
vehicle. MADD supports this bill, and we do to, it is just
plain common sense!
It makes it illegal for
people in all parish's of the state to drive with an open
container of alcohol in a vehicle as a passenger of the vehicle.
It is already in place in 16 parishes across the state, this
creates a standard, and reduces the risks in our environment for
alcohol related harms. I signed a Green Card Supporting
this Bill--The Alcohol Industry was there, who agreed to support
the bill this year (which is why it got out of committee!!)
Senate Bill
679 Passes Out of the Judiciary C Committee-
Treatment Funding now in Jeopardy
Senate Bill 679, by Senator Chaisson, was heard in the Senate
Judiciary C committee. The bill passed out of the Senate
Committee (Chaisson is the Chair of that Committee) at a vote 2
against and 3 in favor.

The Real
Tragedy-The Band-Aid on our
current DWI crisis in Louisiana has been developing for many
years. It is very apparent that some law makers are
intent on "punishing" sick people, regardless of its effect on
reducing the number of intoxicated drivers on the road.
They clearly need our continued messages and I encourage you all
to write your Senators and Representatives asking them to review
data that is in line with national directives that are proven to
reduce these harms to blameless victims on our highways.
It is really tragic to know that system that supports high
numbers of deaths year after year will not change to benefit of
Louisiana residents, unless we have our voice heard.

Report on progress of DWI & Treatment
-Treatment-Works!
DWI and Treatment Update Report from OAD
Treatment is working for DWI
offenders....
Last week an update on the progress of 3rd and 4th offenders who are
receiving treatment for alcohol abuse and dependence continue to show
positive progress even a year after completing their treatment plans.
We need to move Louisiana law makers forward in supporting treatment and
recovery support. Clearly this is saving money we would be
spending for incarceration not to mention the lives that are being
saved. We still need 1st offense screenings, basically we are in
need of a "System Change" criminal treatment is more costly, and not
effective for those who are abusing or addicted to alcohol.
Waiting as the law presently calls for for a 3rd or 4th offense before
offering treatment, is too late in the game! We need to get
proactive, and standardize alcohol screenings by those trained, and
licensed in our state to do so---this is urgent! We are working on
legislation to support this progressive idea! 3/4 of those
arrested 1st offense meet the criteria for treatment, but we currently
are not screening those arrested for such problems!
