Loosing New Orleans

Feeling hopeless and hopelessness.

Terror for lost and surviving souls of our city.

The electricity came on September 1, 2005

After 3 days of sleeping away from home, I returned to find only big branches down, and a small tree on the side of our home.

The news reports that night revealed what fears I had about deaths, and ongoing denial of a people continuing to be in need.  Those who were already cast aside, were now left to be stacked in their deaths at the side of the Morial convention center, many having begged for aid and help for days and in truth years gone by. I painted this that night- my feelings of shock and disbelief, our own people, left to die, trapped by water and folks that feared them.  These were scared people, not people to scared of.

Loosing New Orleans, loosing the soul and spirit of kindness that was always known to me in places where folks struggled the most only because they had the least --in worldly things at least.  The spirit and soul of this city is one of survival, thriving in circumstances most can't fathom living in, while carrying hope in their hearts for a new day.  My heart was hurting for the many I know in all areas of the city, more than all for those souls that were being lost to simple beliefs by those of greater means that left these folks to the thoughts of someone else, and actions of anyone else.  The lost souls, lost our greatest city when they sent out sos calls to the saddest of all, the indifferent.
